Judge Charles A. Johnson was appointed to Court on October 31, 1989, by Governor Henry Bellmon to fill the unexpired term of Hez. J. Bussey. He served as Presiding Judge 1995-96, 2003-04, 2009-10. Judge Johnson graduated from Ponca City High School. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Oklahoma and his LLB from the University of Oklahoma in 1955. After release from active duty with the U.S. Air Force, he practiced law in Pawhuska and Ponca City. He was a senior law partner with the law firm of Phipps, Johnson, Holmes & Hermanson. He is a past member and Chairman of the Oklahoma Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and a past President of the Kay County Bar Association. He continued to be a private practitioner of law until his appointment to the Court. He was active in the Reserve component of the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Colonel, USAFR, having received the Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. He was a selectee as one of three Outstanding Young Oklahomans and 1993 Appellate Judge of the Year by the Oklahoma Trial Lawyers Association. His participation in the OBA and ABA is extensive.
