Bert Barefoot attended high school in Nacoma, Texas. He received his B.S. degree from Georgetown University. He then attended Texas University Law School and received his LL.B. in 1901. In 1902, he moved to Chickasha, Indian Territory. Although his mother was one half Choctaw they were not on the Indian rolls. He started a law firm, Barefoot & Carmichael, and became the first county attorney of Grady County. In 1924, he was a delegate for the Democratic National Convention in New York.

Barefoot was elected to the Court of Criminal Appeals in 1936 and he had commenced serving his third six-year term on the Court at his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a Mason. He belonged to the Elks and Lions organizations and was chairman of the Sixth District for the Democratic Party for several years. He served as Director of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce. Judge Barefoot was president of the Chickasha School Board for almost 15 years. His hobbies included hunting and fishing.
